Afterburners Toastmasters | District 25 Toastmasters | Toastmasters International About Afterburners ~ What We Do ~ A Toastmaster's Promise ~ Testimonials An Afterburners Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which we practice our public speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere by giving a prepared or impromptu speech, or by serving in another meeting role such as timer, evaluator or grammarian. Our meetings are comprised of approximately 25-30 people who meet weekly for an hour and a half. There is no instructor; instead, each speech and
meeting is critiqued by one of ourselves in a positive manner, focusing on
what was done right and what could be improved. By working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking, we learn skills related to use of humor, gestures, eye contact, speech organization and overall delivery. When finished with this manual, we may choose from 15 advanced manuals to learn skills related to specific interests. We learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and serving as officers at the club and district levels, and by working in the Competent Leadership manual and the High Performance Leadership program. We give people responsibilities and ask them to lead. For the benefit of our community we conduct a youth leadership program which provides public speaking, speech writing, and leadership training for students ages 8-17. Some of our members also are available as speakers to help other nonprofit organizations and community and government groups tell their stories to the community.
